We recently launched new additions to the Emerson family. The Emerson range, which is characterised by its stunning chevron fluted detailing, has been extended and now includes a low back armchair, a two-, three- and four-seater sofa, and matching footstool and ottomans. This statement collection will look stunning in a variety of settings including reception areas, lounges or senior living apartments.
The Story of the Emerson
The Emerson four-seater sofa and ottoman was originally designed as a bespoke piece of furniture for the Care Show in 2022. Shackletons design team were delighted with the initial sofa and ottoman designs, so the pieces were added to our contract furniture range for care and senior living with a view to expand the collection.
The Initial Brief & Design
The initial brief and inspiration were for two fluted back and bulbous four-seater sofas upholstered in a deep velvet, with two co-ordinating ottomans. The range was designed and developed by our in-house team who embraced the brief and set to work. It was decided a new design concept would be most suitable to fit the brief. Shackletons design team undertook research visits, including to Hix, to focus on textures and developed initial concepts and line drawings. The final concept included fluted chevrons which would be integral to the final design.
Development & Production
A new frame was designed and manufactured for the sofa, and a feasibility study was conducted with a range of prototypes produced. The development team focussed on the foams required to achieve the fluted chevron design. A specialist foam was required for the fluted chevrons which was dense enough to hold the shapes of the flutes without collapsing but soft enough to be sewn through. Three prototypes were developed and tested for this stage to find the perfect foam and various leg options were tested to complete the look. Once the frame had been prepared with springs and foam, the furniture was ready to upholster. The fabric was cut to size and sewn before carefully being upholstered on to the furniture.
Extending the Collection
Due the positive reaction and success of the initial four-seater sofa and ottoman, the range has been extended to include a variety of options to suit a wide range of spaces.
